Where To Find Cheap Gas and Gas Savings Tips

By MySpendingPlan.com Editorial Staff

The oil situation in the world is not getting any better, which unfortunately keeps pushing gas prices up.  Finding cheap gas has become the need of the hour for most Americans as their gas costs are skyrocketing.  Below we'll show you how to find cheap gas and also give you plenty of gas saving tips.

Find Cheap Gas Online

There are many websites on the Internet, autos.msn.com and fueleconomy.gov being two of them, where you can check the rates of gas across your city.  These websites update their gas prices everyday and show you where you can find cheap gas in your city.  You can choose the pump closest to you.  Obviously, it wouldn’t make sense to drive all over the place and burn a bunch of gas just to purchase the cheap gas!

Gas Saving Tips

  • Always drive your car at as constant a speed as you can.  Speeding up suddenly only to brake a little harder causes your engine to burn more fuel – braking burns gas.
  • Ensure that your car engine is always tuned properly.  Keep your air filter clean.  This helps to increase gas mileage and lower gas costs.
  • Make sure that your tires are inflated to the right pressure.  Properly inflated tires can save you as much as 10% on your gas costs.
  • Keep your car as light as possible.  Remove all unnecessary stuff from the trunk.  This will push up your gas mileage.
  • Most people think that topping up and keeping their tank full will give them better gas mileage.  However, just the opposite is true.  Fill your tank only half and not all the way as this keeps the weight down.  Lower weight increases fuel efficiency and gas mileage.
  • If you are currently driving a fuel guzzler, think of switching to a hybrid car or other lighter cars which are excellent gas savers.  People think the big gas guzzlers are safer, but this is not always true.  In fact, many SUVs have rollover problems and other safety hazards.  As electric hybrids can give you as much as 10 to 15 miles more per galloon of gas which translates into great gas savings.  Some top hybrids in the market are the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic hybrids.  There are even hybrid SUVs now, like the Ford Escape Hybrid and the Lexus RX400h.  You will be surprised at the power of these hybrids too.  Many tax breaks are also being offered to hybrid buyers.
  • Find a gas buddy.  Try and set up a carpool for work or to take your children to school.
  • Most cars are at their best fuel efficiency when driven at 45-50 miles per hour.  By going over 60 mph, you can reduce your gas mileage considerably.  So, drive within the speed limits.  It may take you a few more minutes to get somewhere, but you save money, avoid more accidents and avoid expensive tickets that also increase your insurance rates.  The time you save by speeding is not very much in most cases.
  • When driving on the freeways, make sure to put your vehicle in cruise control mode.  This helps to give you better gas mileage.
  • Roll down your windows and turn off the AC when you are going at slow speeds.  This helps to consume less gas.  However, if you’re driving at speeds over 40 mph, it is better to keep your windows rolled up so that there is lower air resistance.  This always results in better gas mileage.
  • Take advantage of gas rebate credit cards.  Gas rebate cards give you back some amount of money that you spend on buying gas each month.  Choose a gas rebate card that allows you to buy gas at all pumps and not just at selected gas pumps.
  • Turn the engine off wherever possible such as when stuck in really bad traffic that is not moving, or if there’s any kind of holdup in traffic etc.  Also, it is better to shift to park when you are stopped in traffic than holding down the brakes.
  • If you’re happy with your regular fuel, stick to it and do not go in for premium brands.  Most people do not find any difference after using premium gas other than the added power in their cars.  But since added power does not mean better gas mileage, stick to basic.  Some cars are tuned for premium fuel though, and may get better gas mileage with it.
  • Use a GPS or navigation unit and try and travel on roads that have less traffic.  GPS units also help you from getting lost and driving about aimlessly, thus increasing your gas consumption.

If you follow all the above steps for saving gas, you will need to fill up much less than before.
